GRADING SYSTEM for STUDIO BASED / DESIGN COURSES
Marks Grade Description
95 – 100 > A+ < Excellent
85 – 94 > A < High
75 – 84 > A- <Distinction
70 – 74 > B+ <Very Good
65 – 69 > B < Good
60 – 64 > B- < Merit
55 – 59 > C+ < Satisfactory
50 – 54 > C < Pass
49 and below > F < Fail
UPGRADING OF WORKS
Upgrading of Works MAY BE ACCEPTED at the sole discretion of the Studio Master / Lecturer / Tutors;
Such works if accepted MUST BE SUBMITTED within 3 days after the last day of the Examination Week calendar (including weekend and public holiday);
Acceptance of such works may not necessarily be a guarantee in whatsoever manner that the marks / grade will be upgraded.
LATE SUBMISSION PENALTY
PENALTY FOR LATE SUBMISSION may be applied with 10 marks deduction (after the deadline) with additional 1 mark deduction for the following day(s) of submission (including weekend and/or holiday);
Penalty may be applied with MAXIMUM 10 marks deduction for failure to attend the Final Crit;
Penalty may be applied with MAXIMUM 20 marks deduction for failure to attend the Final Jury Presentation.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Only two types of referencing may be accepted for your work submissions, namely the Harvard referencing and Chicago referencing;
Plagiarism policy shall be applied on ALL types of assignments;
PENALTY FOR PLAGIARISM may include DISMISSAL FROM THE UNIVERSITY.
shall be based on the combination of the Dynamic AND Cyclical Assessment which include but are not limited to the following processes;
Progressive Assessment [individual assessment]; assessment of work from the beginning of the semester until end of semester
Final Assessment [individual assessment]; assessment of Final Submission & Portfolio Submission
Comparative Assessment [peer-to-peer evaluation]; comparative benchmarking of work accomplished within the studio, and/or previous semester works (of the same studio) and/or similar level of work accomplished by other institutions accredited by the Council of Architctural Accredition and Eduction Malaysia (MAPSM)
ALL MARKS / GRADE GRANTED ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE in accordance to the Grade Proceedings;
Studio Master reserves the right not to disclose the mark / carry marks;
Such marks, if disclose shall be considered as TENTATIVE MARKS AND SUBJECT TO CHANGE in accordance to the Grade Proceedings;
Studio Master may disclose range of performance indicator of evaluated works by the tagging of colors;
B+ and above;
B-, B
C, C+
incomplete work
/ did not meet minimum competency level
Depending on the overall performance of the students' works, the Studio Master may at his/her sole discretion to review and granted CUMULATIVE FINAL MARKS for the Progressive Assessment, Final Assessment and Comparative Assessment based on the following justifications;
Marks for Progressive Assessment MAY BE UPGRADED by maximum 20% or MAY BE DOWNGRADED by maximum 40% in proportionate Final Assessment marks OR by multiplying factor to the Final Assessment marks;
Maximum 10% BONUS MARKS may be granted in the following circumstances;
- Pacemaker points based on Comparative Assessment;
- Pacemaker points based on recommendation by the External Examiner;
- Leadership, Cooperation, Discipline and Participation in Studio;
- Extra Curricular activities;
- Other justification as deemed acceptable by the architectural education standard and benchmarking, subject to approval by the Dean AND/OR the Senate.
PENALTY WAIVER
Depending on the overall performance of the students' works, the Studio Master may at his/her sole discretion to reconsider / waive penalty applied due to non-compliance and/or late submission;
Such decision shall be made with reference to the Syllabus, PLO, CLO and shall meet minimum competency level expected for the studio design matrix / coordination for the program;
Assessment Weightage Ratio;
Studio Master : Tutor(s) assessment ratio shall be 3 : 2 [60/40], and;
Studio Master and/or Tutor(s) : Final Crit / Final Jury Presentation assessment ratio shall be 4 : 1 [80/20];
In any case, the Progress Marks / Penalty Applied (if any)in the Previous Assessment SHALL BE REMAINED;
MODERATED ASSESSMENT by the Independent Panel appointed by the Faculty may be conducted as and when the need arises;
For such case, the Progress Marks & ALL PENALTIES in the Previous Assessment SHALL BE REMAINED;
[Previous Assessment Record : Independent Panel] assessment ratio SHALL BE TALLIED at 1 : 1 [50/50];
The Faculty may at its sole discretion decide to refer to either one of the assessments by the Previous Assessment Record OR the assessment by the Independent Panel;
GRADE PROCEEDINGS; ALL ASSESSMENT / MARKS GRANTED SHALL BE TENTATIVE and subject to the following proceedings;
Internal moderation for studio based / design courses (if the need arises);
Endorsement by the Faculty Board of Examination, then,
Endorsement by the University Board of Examination, then;
Endorsement by the Senate;
GRADE REVIEW assessment (if necessary) shall be conducted in accordance to but not limited to the followings;
that in any cases, the Progress Marks & Late Penalty applied in the Previous Assessment SHALL BE REMAINED;
that the Board of Grade Review the may at its sole discretion decide to dismiss part of the Penalty Applied for FAILURE TO ATTEND FINAL CRIT AND/OR FINAL JURY PRESENTATION, provided that maximum penalty dismissed SHALL NOT BE MORE THAN HALF of the original penalty applied for such cases;
that the weightage ratio for the Main Project / Final Submission assessment of the Previous Assessment Record : Board of Independent Panel SHALL BE TALLIED at 1 : 1;
that the weightage ratio for the Portfolio assessment of the Previous Assessment Record : Board of Independent Panel SHALL BE TALLIED at 1 : 1;
that the Chairman of Board of Grade Review the may at its sole discretion decide to refer to EITHER ONE of the assessment by the Previous Assessment Record OR the findings by the Board of Grade Review, prior to make final recommendation of the grade review result;
Grade after the Grade Review procedure may be changed as downgrade or remain or upgrade;
- Maximum upgrade for ‘F’ grade is ‘C’;
- Maximum upgrade for other grades is 1 step up of the original grade;
- Maximum downgrade for other grades is 1 step down of the original grade;
Updated grade after the Grade Review SHALL BE FINAL.
WEEKLY DESIGN TUTORIAL LOG; w.e.f. JUNE 2014 SEMESTER, ALL STUDENTS MUST RECORD THEIR WORK PROGRESS in a proper log > CLICK HERE to download the template
Name / Studio / Program / etc can be tailored according to your respective studio;
Student shall print, then update the DESIGN TUTORIAL LOG on weekly basis;
The log sheet shall be recorded and updated with all pertinent notes in studio briefings, tutorials, design progress and other self learning time records, etc,;
The log shall be submitted on to studio master / tutor for verification on WEEKLY / MONTHLY basis;
Compilation of 14 Weeks of DESIGN TUTORIAL LOG must be submitted together with A3 Design Portfolio Submission;
POSTER PRESENTATION
A0 / A1 / A2 POSTER(s) in portrait orientation demonstrating summary of all project / best works for the semester must be submitted TOGETHER WITH the Final Presentation Board > CLICK HERE for reference
FINAL PRESENTATION BOARDS shall include but not limited to the followings;
Design Abstract – minimum 100 words
Graphic Explanation of Design Works
2D ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS;
Key Plan (NTS - not to scale)
1:1000 or appropriate scale for Location Pla
1:500 or 1:250 Site Plan / Layout Plan
1:500 or 1:250 Sectional Elevation for Site Context
Scale for BUILDING PLANS (including sections & elevations);
1:100 or 1:150 or 1:200 or other appropriate scale recommended by Studio Master;
Furniture layout / interior architecture layout must be included;
1:20 scale DETAILED DRAWING (top to bottom section showing construction detailings) for Year 1 & Year 2 studios;
3D DRAWINGS; Minimum 3D Graphic / Drawing Requirements;
Perspective Drawings;
- min. 1 nos. of Featured Perspective
- min. 2 nos. of Bird Eye View / Worm Eye View / Eye Level View
- min. 2 nos. of Interior Perspective
Perspective Drawing may be replaced with;
- photograph of fine work of the Final Model AND/OR;
- montage / collage works, i.e; Site Montage (using final model) / Interior Montage (using final model), AND/OR;
- axonometric / exploded axonometric / isometric drawings.
MODELS and/or MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION
Progress working model for MAIN Project is compulsory for all studios - all works must be recorded and be included in the Student’s Portfolio (A3);
Prototype Work / Final model for MAIN Project is compulsory for all studios - all works must be recorded and be included in the Final Presentation Board AND Student’s Portfolio (A3);
3D ANIMATION / ‘Walk-Thru’ Animated Multimedia may be accepted in-lieu of Final Model (applicable for Year 3 only) > CLICK HERE for reference.
Other types of animation / video / multimedia are encouraged.
